As I mentioned in the previous Monthly Musing, I have been working on a short story in the horror genre. I can happily say that I have finished that story and am really proud of the results. It has gotten me in the mood for writing more short stories, not only as a fun way of experimenting with my writing but also because these kinds of stories might give me the chance of being published somewhere and find new audiences who enjoy my work.
I read that Edgar Allen Poe, who is considered the master of writing short stories, began writing these kinds of stories as a way to make a living. Why not give that a shot, I figured. It offers a much better prospect of earning some money and of getting my name out there than writing a novel every 5-10 years. Don’t get me wrong, that is still my main calling as a writer, and something that I want to keep doing, but in the meantime I need to be writing other types of texts if I want to have any hope of finding an audience for it.
