No full article this week, but instead a short(er) post celebrating a milestone for this newsletter, to share with you this wonderful news! The Critical Consent newsletter passed 100 subscribers last month! In this post, I will share some of my thoughts about this wonderful moment, as well as insights into how we managed to get there.
Technically, we passed the 100 somewhere in the first week of May, but I have not managed to get around to posting this announcement until now. Part of that is how busy I have been with getting out last month’s articles, which included following the Council of Europe Summit in Iceland and doing deep research into certain lies spread around the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant for Russian President Putin. The other part was that I am not really the sort of person who likes touting numbers. But after thinking about it for a few weeks, and having discussions with other Substackers, I ultimately concluded that it is important to share and celebrate milestones with you. As a fledgling community, we are all in this together, after all.
I think the most amazing thing about that number is that I have accumulated more than half of those subscribers after my post about stress and motivation, in which I talked about how I decided to shift my energy more towards what I find most important, namely my writing.
It is truly fantastic to see all that hard work pay off, and I have been amazed by the fantastic and well thought-out reactions I have got from you and from other readers. Another part of this amazing growth has been the Substack platform, which manages to bring in new subscribers on a fairly constant basis. Right now it estimates that the month of May brought in 13 new subscribers (bringing the number of subscribers to 113!). That is almost one every 2 days!
The ‘number of views’ graph above is especially interesting. It starts at the date I moved my articles from my website to Substack. The February 2022 peak was when Russia invaded Ukraine, and I did a series of articles about everything that was happening. That also brought in a bunch of new subscribers. Then there was a period in which I was very busy, working on my studies as well as focusing on my teaching. Then there was that article about stress that I mentioned earlier, published on 15 February. I decided to refocus my energy towards what really matters to me, towards what I want to do in life. I think you’ll agree with me that this graph clearly demonstrates the difference. This is incredibly motivating, and inspires me to keep putting my heart and soul into this work.
Then there was also the introduction of Notes, on which I can share interesting or important news with a wider audience. I like how it enables me to share things with you and others that I come across in my day-to-day internet browsing. Especially things that would probably never make it into an entire post. If you have not checked Notes out yet, take a look at what I post there. You do not need the Substack app, you can access it straight from this newsletter’s homepage.
In any case, I could not have done this without you. Thank you so much for your interest and your support! I hope that we can keep growing as a community, and that I get to keep using this platform to get the truth out about the essential issues of our time. There are so many things going on the world every single day, and our society is truly struggling to overcome its many inner predilections and contradictions. I know that I want to be a part of that struggle, and help create the change that we so desperately need. You have my sincerest gratitude for choosing to be a part of that. Hope to see more of you.
~Robert
